Winter Begins, yeah!
Though winter officially begins on 12/22, the lucky Minnesotans have been skating for a month, surrounding areas off and on, and the east….if it wasn't for lovely Ms. Mother Nature they would have had lots of skating already too, but too much snow too early! I'll help you out with the too much too early questions below with a FAQ answer.
Temperature Swings
Though winter is here, the temperature will still go up and down and very warm on 12/23 and 12/24 for many areas. When the temps rise above 35-36 it's best to not skate during those afternoons as the ice will get very soft and you will chew your surface up too easily. The mornings are still very good with cold night temps and later in the evenings the ice should harden back up around 8:00 or so to do some night skating.
FAQ - SNOW – "Too Much * Too Early"
#1 Question now that rinks are installed is…..
If I had 1"-3" of ice and we got dumped with snow, and it turned to slush what do we do? The answer is NOTHING! What happens is the weight of the snow forces the big ice block down, thereby forcing water up between the ice and the side board which then saturates the snow into slush. The perfect scenario is that the ALL the snow turns to slush and then you let that ALL freeze and then you can resurface the frozen slush with your NiceIce resurfacer or spray coat thin layers, DON'T FLOOD ICE with a thick layer of water, you'll wreck your ice. After you have base ice, thin layering is the only way to get and keep good quality ice.
